Vale’s presence in Malaysia extends beyond its operational area – we believe that as an organization, we are well-positioned to support a sustainable social development in the country.

We have a global ambition to become one of the safest and most trustworthy mining companies; and we are committing to building a relationship with local communities based on the spirit of mutual trust and respect.

Our social focus in Malaysia

Our social investments in Malaysia are designed to benefit local communities in the following areas: economic development, culture and arts, education, and environmental advocacy.

Our approach focuses on continuity, so we curate and select initiatives with the highest potential of generating a lasting positive impact to the society.

We also partner with local stakeholders to deliver social programs, and welcome suggestions and proposals from community members to improve current initiatives or introduce new ones that will benefit the society.

How do we select social programs to support?

We have a structured methodology and a strict governance policy that guides our socioenvironmental investment decisions in Vale. As a global company, our Purpose is to improve life and transform the future together, and we are prioritizing programs that are:

  • Designed to provide a longer lasting benefit to the community/society, such as education support, skill-building, training, and empowerment initiatives;
  • Inclusive. We prioritize programs that elevate socioeconomically marginalized or excluded communities, aligned with our goal to elevate diversity and champion inclusion;
  • Prioritizing community safety, because a safer community means a safer Vale, and to us, life matters most;
  • Generating value to Manjung and Perak, benefiting communities living close to our operational site in Teluk Rubiah;
  • Promoting environmental advocacy and education, such as conservation programs, biodiversity preservation campaign, and environmental educational programs at Vale Eco Centre (VEC).
Vale also has a global policy that limits our social investments in areas that are not within our focus priorities. As a general guidance, we do not support requests that:

  • Assume or replace obligations of a Government Authority to fund operational expenses of public infrastructure or equipment (utilities such as cleaning, electricity, gas etc.), human resources expenses (including public sector wages and benefits) and administrative costs;
  • Involve projects or assets of religious nature for the purpose of spreading faith, values and principles of any group, except when they are formally recognized as a historical, artistic and/or cultural heritage.
We also exercise a strict policy of not being involved in any social or community programs that are deemed to:

  • Generate potential harm, even if indirectly, to life, society, the environment or the reputation of the Company and/or Vale System companies;
  • Violate the commitment to respect, inclusion, equality and valuing human and cultural diversity;
  • Violate the Ethics and Compliance Program and other Vale regulations and/or local laws and regulations;
  • Have, as a specific or exclusive objective, advertising or promotion of partners or contractors, in any format, physical or digital;
  • Have, as an objective, campaigns for the reduction of financial debt (personal or organizational) of the beneficiaries’ organizations.
Vale is a non-political organization. While there is no restriction for our employees to participate in political activities as individuals (not as company’s representatives), we do not participate in social programs that denote political affiliations. These include programs that:

  • Have direct or indirect contributions to political parties, including those organized in parties, and for their representatives or candidates, as well as contributions for political use;
  • Are carried out for the Government Authorities during the electoral blackout period, without the prior analysis and recommendation of the Legal Department.
Vale reserves the discretionary right to include other clauses on top of those stated above.
