Control and Management of Dams

Another of Vale's dams leaves emergency level and is certified as safe and stable

The Peneirinha dam, located at the Horizontes mine, in the Vargem Grande complex, in Nova Lima (MG), was removed from the emergency level by the National Mining Authority (ANM) last Thursday (21 March). The structure received a positive Declaration of Stability Condition (DCE) certifying its safety.

This is the Company's 12th dam to leave the emergency level in the last two years. Of the 19 dams that remain in some emergency, all that have received tailings are inactive. Additionally, all upstream dams are in the process of being de-characterized. These dams are continuously monitored and receive ongoing safety improvement activities.

Peneirinha - The Peneirinha dam contains approximately 1 million m³ of tailings and was constructed using the centerline raising method. It has been inactive since 1986 and no longer receives tailings. Geotechnical investigations and laboratory tests have confirmed the structure's safety and stability, allowing the removal of the emergency level and the issuance of the DCE.
